Materials:
Yarn – I would recommend using yarn of the same brand (or that you know will work up to the same size) for the body and coat to avoid a poor fit. Even if two yarns are listed as the same weight / size, there is quite often a big difference between different brands.
For the purple penguin I have used:
– Colour (A), Made by Penguins, DK / Light Worsted Baby Alpaca, Blackberry, approx. 25g
– Colour (B), Novita DK Baby Merino, Cream, approx. 20g
– Colour (C), Ricorumi DK Cotton, pale yellow, approx. 10g
– Small amount of black and yellow thread for embroidery
– Recommended hook size: 2.5mm (the example penguin was made with a 2.5mm hook)
– Safety eyes: 6 mm x 2 – safety eyes are not recommended for young children.

The Body

To check you are happy with the position of your safety eyes and the amount you are stuffing you can try the coat on the body now and then. They eyes should be about level with the yellow embroidery on the beak and about half way between this and the sides of the coat.

Use a small amount of blush to create rosy cheeks on the lower border of the eyes.

Sew the feet to the body. The flat end of the feet should point outward.
Sew the top of the curved section to the base of the coat.
Sew the flippers to the sides of the coat. The top of the flipper is about level with the eyes.

To make the band, ch 19.

Attach band across top of head. Attach round muffs at either side of the band, stuffing lightly if desired.

Scarf:
In Cherry, ch 5.
R1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, ch 2, turn. (4)
R2-R44: In front loops only, hdc in each st across, ch 2, turn.  
Fasten off, weaving in ends. Wrap scarf around Chilly’s neck and attach with a stitch where the scarf overlaps itself.
